Join us for a group fast before Thanksgiving!
At Zero, our community’s Thanksgiving menus are going to span the full spectrum of possibilities—traditional spreads, vegan dinners, keto pot lucks, and everything in between. Many of us will be relaxing our dietary rules for a few days and enjoying family, fun, and food. And why not? We spend so much time putting food (and lack thereof) to work for our health, it makes sense to take a few days to celebrate your hard work and enjoy yourself.
To prepare, we thought a fast before the feast would be beneficial. There are a few reasons for this:
- To give our gut a little rest before putting it to work.
- To shift our mindset so when we do feast, we do so thoughtfully.
- To appreciate the delicious food even more.
We’ll be doing a 3-day group fast, led by Dr. Peter Attia, from Sunday night (the 24th) through Wednesday night (the 27th). Join us for all or part of the fast—the duration is up to you! We encourage you to partake for a duration that you feel comfortable with. Follow us on Instagram, and comment on our Fast Before the Feast post so we know you’re fasting with us.

This will be my first attempt at a 3-day fast and I’m not sure I’ll make it but I’m willing to try. I’ve really enjoyed this app for the last 3 days since I learned of it. The articles and videos are informative.
Wow three day fast. I think it is really cool. As hard as it will be I will do my best to go all the way. I love feeling like there are others joining me. It makes all the difference.

First 24 hours are the most difficult- Be prepared to have productive items to do during normal meal times. And remember anyone can fast for 3 days and the benefits are amazing!!

I started fasting last Friday and I feel amazing. Since then, I have practiced intermittent eating and love this app! I would love to see more articles to keep us motivated. I don’t have twitter but would love to join in the fast. I should add I’m down 7 pounds and 6 percent body fat. For the last few days, although I have been intermittently eating, I have been losing a percentage of body fat and have maintained my weight. I know in the next few days the scale will drop, too. I am very overweight and I have never felt so well during a “diet”. I don’t even feel like I’m doing it. Lemon basil water is a must. I started to add basil just to use my little plant but wow it has helped with my knee pain tremendously. Thank you zero and zero community!!
The trick is to stay occupied. Days 1 and 2 are the most challenging. Hunger is the most intense during your typical meal times for about 2 hours. Make plans to things before the time comes, you will be most successful if you are outdoors where there is no food during those times. Hunger subsides significantly on day 3.
My last group fast was 5 days. If you drink plenty of water you shouldn’t experience any hunger (only flavor boredom). My sodium is low as it is, and this time I’ll know to add a bit of salt each day.

After the second day it’s easy. It’s just a mindset to make up your mind to do it. I drink lots of water, herb tea and coffee in the morning.

This will be my very first attempt as well . Was actually thinking about before this popped up. I’m going to be so busy on Monday and hope my energy reserves and electrolytes gets me through it.
You can do it. I have fasted for 21 days and it gets easier every fast. Just focus on your goal and why you are fasting. Remember when you get very hungry to drink some electrolytes and it will pass quickly without any issues. The longest I have ever been uncomfortable while fasting was three minutes. Three minutes is not enough to break your fast for.

I d already instructed my friends that I will be doing this fast so no temptations allowed . My family is also aware and on board with me doing this . So having the support of all helps.

Thus far I have been doing 22 days of intermittent fasting , combination of 16/8 and 20/4.. I have lost 12 lbs thus far and feel great/good. I am a breast cancer survivor of 6 years and prior to diagnosis I was trim and healthy but unfortunately because of treatments and sedentary life I gained 34 lbs and thanks to this zero app/fasting I am now taking my life back after 6 years !

I am willing to try but am I the only one that not going to indulge in the carbs. I would love to since I am cooking them but I am so afraid I won’t go back to being good. I am having Turkey salad and broccoli with cheese any other ideas but I am only at 20 grams still. 55 pounds down do not want to mess it up over one meal.
To fast means no food of any kind. I would suspect that the only thing allowed is black coffee, tea with no sweetener or cream, and water.

This is my first 3 days fasting. I am comfortable up 24 hours, so let’s how things will work out. My last meal was 5:15 PM.
My last meal was at 7pm pst. Usual on my 16/7 or 20/4 I stop eating at 6pm but I allowed an extra hour yesterday during football game as I had a beautiful Bloody Mary waiting to be drank lol.
Now I’m on it. Minus being busy today I’m going to movie binge .
The longest fast I’ve done is 25 hours and honestly I didn’t feel bad I only ate because I wanted to stick with in my eating window and not go into a 36 hour fast .

I’m not part of Zero app, just a regular ordinary guy. For me, in Denver CO. USA, I will be doing a 72 hour water only fast starting at 6pm Sunday thru 6pm Wednesday.
I live in Germany and I believe it’s based on your time zone and can start any time on Sunday. That is how the group Halloween fast worked.
I’m going to start at the same time I usually begin my 16:6 daily fast, 8:00 p.m.
Penni, I would suggest drinking plenty of water. I didn’t experience any hunger at all on a 5-day water fast, and I didn’t have any coffee or tea.
I meant to write 16:8. I fast from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.
I’ve have wondered what IF was actually doing for me because I haven’t lost any weight at all despite 8 weeks of IF, so I stopped. Went back to having breakfast and eating snacks later at night while on holidays.
I now know. IF stops the bloating, gives me better mood and overall a better sense of wellbeing.
I’ll restart IF by joining part of the fast. Thank you for always insipiring.

I am from your time zone (Tell Aviv, Israel) and started the fast yesterday at 23:00 without even hearing about the new “Thanks Giving” challenge.
I have been doing fasts for a bit more than a year. Started using the excellent Zero app back in Aug 2019 and reached a max of 108 and 96 hours fasts. Yeah
Completed yesterday a 61.5 hour fast and today a 27.5 hour fast 🙂

I’m in but one slight concern. On previous 3 day fast. When breaking I’d have like an apple. That is the best tasting apple you will ever eat if you’ve never completed a 3 day before. But I’ve consumed very small portion for the next couple days. I want to grub on Thursday. Either there is method to the doctors madness. Or he has a break plan.

I haven’t been to go past 24 hours so I thought maybe with a group might help. So I will give it a good honest try.
I’ve only done max 25 hour fast but I’ve been doing intermittent fasting 16/8 and 20/4 ( with occasional 24-25 hour fast) for the past 22-23 days , so my hope is although this won’t be easy I can certainly do it. I have my electrolytes on board . So other then water with electrolytes and some turmeric/ginger unsweetened tea I’m set

You keep busy, drink water with electrolytes and keep busy some more. Thankfully for me other then today I have nothing scheduled for the next few days that will tempt me any further then my hunger itself lol . No parties , pot lucks or travel plans to have to resist.

I’m drinking water, and water infused with lemon. Also, black coffee and plain tea, no sweetener or cream. I am diabetic and also have naturally low sodium so I’ll be adding a pinch of salt once a day. A little salt in your water will also help if you become nauseous

Zero calorie zero sweetener, Electrolyte drink. Aka salt water. Potassium and sodium. Google snake juice recipe.
Umm? Nothing . Lol. That’s why it’s a fast ? This will help though . From my experience I recommend loading up on salt and water full day before . Hydrating fruit and veg best . Cucumbers covered in salt , plenty of watermelon and no sugar at all if anything a nice fatty steak. Have coconut water and Avocados , spinach for potassium loadup and if you can have a long hot bath in Epsom Salts ( magnesium salts )its better absorbed through skin . Then I find doing the fast dry best ( soft one less aggressive so can wash brush teeth have shower etc but unless you have to be terribly physical ( walking around isn’t it , I mean proper exercise ) advise dry . Resting makes it easy and food cravings are psychological more than anything . It’s actually easier than drinking anything I find . Drinking takes energy to process and it can flush out electrolytes in your body ( so if have to then drink salty water add potassium chloride and sodium best as they work together for energy transfer in the cell ) . If you’ve got over 10% body fat then it’s easy as your body fat is made up of water so in breaking it down the body will just use that to hydrate instead . If you’re under that weight drink salt water if you want to move or be bed bound to conserve energy . Coming off the fast be careful for diarrhoea if you eat it drink too much too soon. I’ve experienced am amazing combo that prepares stomach perfectly . Break fast with 200ml water with half teaspoon of bicarbonate soda . Cools of the kidneys and settles everything . Wait half an hour . Then a teaspoon of resistant starch ( potato starch ) in hot water 200ml let a little bit set it as a paste then mix in cold water to make drinkable. Its like a glue but perfect in stomach . Let all the microbe start to feed and get ready for action. Their starter before your main . A lot there but works perfect . 72 hours best ever fast . You’ll feel great after . Autophapagy , weight loss, mental clarity and hormone spurts that will make your energy soar . Enjoy

Hi Brenda! I’m not an administrator on this site or any kind of fasting authority – but what I’ve done on past extended fasts (that actually got me to 5 days once!) was LOTS of water, including zero calorie, zero carb, flavored sparkling water. Plus unsweetened hot (or cold) tea, black coffee, and bone broth with Himalayan pink salt added – you need your sodium when fasting!
Good luck – you can do it! Day 2 is the hardest for most people, myself included, after that hump it’s easy.
Water. Just water. You may also have black coffee and tea without cream or sweetener. It’s also good to add a pinch of salt each day. It helps to keep sodium level, and also helps with nausea.e

Hi Adriane. As a fellow faster I have a suggestion that might be helpful. I am completing a 40 hour fast right now. I love fasting and the mental and physical benefits. I would suggest considering stopping your fast once you get to the tasting part of the cooking. I like to think positively that the fast is going to be easy and not difficult. If I start my fast thinking that it is going to be difficult, it will be. I always tell myself that it is easy, make it easy and don’t even get hungry. Happy Thanksgiving!! Hope this helps!!

Hi, Been using Zero for almost two months and I’m so grateful for it, it’s really helped me be so much more mindful of the times I am eating and all those times we mindlessly go to the kitchen, mostly from habbit or I think even perhaps boredom. I’ve been doing IF and Keto since July 20, 2019 and I’ve lost around 60 pounds (290 down to 230). I usually do 20:4 but have done 36 hour fast a few times and once did a 36 hour fast. I don’t like to talk about it too much when people ask me what I am doing because I still don’t trust myself but what I tell them simply is that it’s all in your mind – (I point to my brain!) and tell them anyone can do it, but you have to really want it and then just do it!

My first 3 day fast. On Wednesday I’ll be traveling my car 10 hours to our Destiination for the thanksgiving feast and I’m somewhat nervous. Not being able to move around, having to make frequent stops due to consumption of water which will make this 10 hour trip longer. Any suggestions please!

I want to try to do this but I usually do 14 hr fast overnight. I may try to lengthen the time periods but I’m running around tomorrow and Tuesday. I may just be able to lessen the amount of calories I eat during the day by skipping lunch and snacks. Does that count?
I’ve started! I have a work lunch with friends on Wednesday which I don’t want to miss, so my 72 hours started at midday today. I don’t typically do more than 16 hours. My max has been 23, so this will be a real challenge. But I’m looking forward to seeing if I experience the energy high you’re supposed to get when you switch to fat burning!

How do you properly refeed if you are breaking a 3 day fast in the evening? Everything I have read / heard says you need 3 meals after you break your extended fast before fasting again. The overnight fasting window on Wednesday would still be a fasting window.

This might be a silly question to ask but what does a 3 day fast entail? Is it just no food, only water for 3 days?
Does this assume that we are eating Thanksgiving at dinner time or midday? If I break the fast Wednesday night and start eating Thanksgiving foods on Thursday around 3, I don’t think it’s going to go well for my stomach.

I’m on Day 3 of a fast I started Thur (11/23) and think I will extend it for another day or two to be part of this group.
I do water, sparkling water, hot tea, coffee and one cup of bone broth a day on my fasts (plus pink salt) to keep me “full” and so far, on this one, I’ve had zero hunger.
I’ve definitely realized a lot of the time that I am eating, it is not due to hunger, but boredom!

I usually fast for 20 hours a day (20:4) but have only extended that to 24 hours a few times. With that being said I am definitely willing to stick this out and try a 72 hour fast. I have my husband supporting me and thankfully a door I can shut to my office so I don’t have to smell everyone’s food at work. Haha! This has been a great lifestyle change so far and have actually lost over 30 pounds and feel great.

My longest fast has been 83.5 consecutive hours. Thus, 72 hours is definitely achievable. However, I’ve actually been fasting, coincidentally, since last evening. This week’s schedule includes at least one social event before Thursday. Yet, by starting last night, with discipline, it still should work to achieve a 3 day fast before Thursday’s “feasting”. I think I need this, lately I’ve felt like a fat kid with a food addiction, mindlessly eating just to not even because I’m hungry just bored. I’m disappointed in this habit of mine and don’t want it to continue. 3days I haven’t done but I’ll go as long as I can, I need change!!😔 I don’t want to gain weight or be unhealthy. I was hoping to get pregnant next year but I can’t start like this.
I have been feeling the same! As the colder weather approaches, my body always wants to eat more to put on a bit extra weight for the warmth. I’m fasting to try and maintain my weight or lose a few lbs before indulging for the holidays. Been doing 14 hr fasting and it seems to work for me. I stop eating around 6-7pm and don’t eat breakfast til later in the morning. My body won’t allow me to eat before 8am anyway…i also sometimes calorie count if i feel I’m binging too much. I’ve found that drinking lots of water and herbal teas help! Good luck! We got this!
You should be very proud for even trying. Give yourself a lot of credit for just that. The first step to any kind of change is just acknowledging the problem. Do what you can. And then feel good about what you accomplish so it will motivate you to try again. I can totally relate. I’ve been completely disgusted with myself and my weight gain, and feeling like I’m going down hill fast. For me, being in menopause and the changes in how my body retains body fat has been so depressing, and I kind of gave into it for a while. But then I realized How important it is to at least try, even if I fail. I found some great resources and keep jumping back in the saddle even after I get thrown off. Now I’ve completed at least 7 or 8 one-Day (24-hr) fasts and 3 two-day (48 hr) fasts. I started with IF. This will hopefully be my first 3-day fast, but maybe it will be another 2-day fast, lol. I’m just happy I’m seeing progress and there is such a great forum to share and motivate each other. As the saying goes: Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars. My biggest temptation will be on Tuesday when I go out with friends, but hopefully I can. For the last week, I’ve been eating for a one hour window every 47 hours, so I feel extra prepared.

While I can’t do a three-day fast due to being diabetic and needing 60+ grams of protein a day due to that and other issues, I plan on eating less prior to Thanksgiving. (Where are my protein shakes? 😊) Plus, fortunately, I can only eat small portions at a time. The longest I have gone is 27.5 hours. It was easy up until that point, and I regret having eaten since at the time I wasn’t even hungry.

Birth of my first child took me out of the fasting game for a while, but I’m ready to jump back in. Here’s a good excuse to start again.
I haven’t been very good about my intermittent fasting lately and it shows. So… why not! My IBS is in full swing so this may be a good way to get my digestion back on track! Never done more than 24 hours so this could be interesting. Wish me luck!

I have done a three day and it’s a great accomplishment.
We are celebrating on Wednesday so we’ll only be doing a 2 day fast.
We are flying out Thursday morning for a second tday so we’ll fast after Wednesday’s feast one more day.

This is perfect! Today (Sunday) was a feast day after two 72s back to back with a very small refeed in between.
Yesterday was very hard as I felt incredibly weak…!
Also I think I overdid the salts, so I’m glad I broke the fast while safely at home!

This is my first time the do a 3-day fast. Not sure if I can make it but I’m going to give it my best shot
It s gonna be a challenge and I m up to do it… Thanks to fasting and go down in the scale almost 23 pounds in 4 months, my weight before my pregnancy and feel great about it… I m gonna continue in fast not only to lost a few pounds more and also to keep cleaning my body of impurities, and I found that fast is great for me to reduce the volumen of food and take meals of quality. This app is so amazing to keep me motivate on my journey.

I’m planning on trying this intermittently eating smaller portions throughout my eating window. I will eat breakfast today and skip lunch and snacks, then have dinner. Then do my normal 14 hr at night fast while sleeping. Tomorrow night I work, so i have to eat something before that, but I’ll try to extend my 14 hr fast as long as I can during the day. Breakfast is my favorite meal so i usually eat then, and skip lunch. However, I’ve been eating a lot of sweets the last week or so, and i want to cut back again. I’ve been maintaining my weight but want to lose at least a few more lbs before the Christmas cookie baking begins!🤣😂

I was all gung-ho last night, but now in the kitchen for breakfast. Black coffee and looking for motivation.
I have done two 5-day fasting mimicking diets successfully and a 24 and 36-hour fast.

Eating window closed Sunday 11/24/19 @ 6pm.
31 Hrs in, and doing great. Getting the occasional Psycho Grehlins (PG), but those don’t last. Did a Full Body Workout at 28 hrs in, none of my weights went down, didn’t have any negative effects of working out while fasting. Struggled a bit, about an hour after the workout as I’m used to a protein shake post workout – however, PGs don’t last! If I got this, so can you!
62 hrs in, not hungry and very happy. Hopped on a rowing machine at about 50 hrs in, for 20 minutes. Didn’t do my normal, 8 bursts within 15 minutes and chose to do a typical cardio of 20 minutes at steady pace (60% effort). As this is the first time I’m venturing beyond 36 hr fasting, I wasn’t sure what to expect – It went better than expected and I wished I would have done a few bursts. Starting to develop break fast plan. Bottom line, I look forward to doing another 3 day fast somewhere in the first quarter of 2020.
Almost forgot to mention the following the biggest benefit from this fast. Weight Loss: I weigh myself every morning around 6:20 am, on the same scale. I then enter the weight on a 3X5 card that is posted for the whole family to see (accountability), and entered into my Zero App. This “weigh in routine” has proven to be very motivational over time. Anyway, the benefit. On Monday 11/25 I was 179#, Tuesday 11/26 I was 176#, and Wednesday I was 175#. I’ve had a goal since June 1, 2019 (I was 210#) to get to 175 by Thanksgiving. I had all but given up that I would make my goal – I’m so HAPPY!
I’ll be joining the group fast, because I’ve heard misery loves company, haha. Seriously, I was going to do one to make up for the damage from an all you can eat buffet my wife and I are attending so this is perfect, thanks Pete love the Drive and this app is a god send

I started my fast Saturday night and just realized today, it’s been more than 36 hours!
I’m in & ready to prep mind & body for the Thanksgiving feast. I find I eat less immediately after a fast so this will take care of overeating!
At almost 18 hours and I know this is the hard part, and if I get through tonight I’m pretty sure tomorrow will be easier. I haven’t done an over-18 hour fast in years so this motivation is appreciated. Keep going everyone! But don’t hurt yourself-be mindful of pushing beyond your limits – only YOU know what they are.

What are you guys suggestions for working out during a 3 day fast? I’m 36 hours in and now is when I would typically do a 30 min HIIT workout but I don’t want to deplete my body for the rest of the day.
I say go for it! You may find you have a great workout! I’m doing a 92 hr fast this week. Started Sunday evening and will end Thanksgiving day. I’ve continued my workout regimen of walking or doing interval training and weights. Had an awesome workout yesterday, hit the gym pretty hard. Thought I was going to be so sore this am but I feel fantastic! Went for 2.5 mile walk with my walking buddy( my Siberian Husky) and I am just living the high I get from fasting. Live is good! 😇
I started Fasting on Sunday 7 pm. and will end it on Wednesday 7 pm. I feel awesome as of now as I usually do 2 to 3 42hr fast. This will be my first 72 hrs fast. Now just one question…. how should I break the fast so that I can feast on Thanksgiving without any gastrointestinal issues. Thanks!

So I’ve done 72’s and 96’s in the past and I find that what works for me when breaking a fast is to gently start breaking it 2 hours before. I usually start with 2tbsp ACV and lemon juice in 8-10oz hot water and I sip on that for 20 min or so. If you’ve never done ACV it’s an acquired taste. But it’s suppose to get your gut ready to receive food. Gets the intestinal juices going. Then about an hour before I will step cinnamon sticks in hot water. Cinnamon is great for helping to control insulin spikes. Then when the time comes I try to put some good probiotics back into my gut. Kumbucha drink (make sure low or no sugar)or cocoyo yogurt is good for that. Then I wait an hour and as long as I don’t have any issues I will venture onto some protein. I did this on my last 96 in Oct and had no issues whatsoever. Good luck I hope that helps.
I’ve been doing weekly 36 hour fasts (Sunday dinner to Tuesday Lunch) for about a year. Also five day fasts several times a year. First day hardest (although a lot less hard then they use to be). Just saw this on Sunday and decided to go with it. Maintaining my usual morning work out schedule over the next 3 days: Monday HITT on recumbent exercise bike, Tuesday swim/sauna, Wednesday strength training (although I may go a little easier this week). Otherwise my normal part time work schedule. (at a desk) I’ll be 70 years old in December. Happy Thanksgiving.
Started at 7pm on Sunday night. First 72 hour fast. Been on Keto for nearly two years. Fasting feels great as I am enjoying the flooding of ketones to my brain. Group fasting is a great motivator. A colleague offered me donuts today. 😾

I am only able to do about two days because if I feel awkward to not eat lunch at school – especially since I qualify for free lunch. However, I’ve never fasted more than 20 hours and all these food adds on my phone aren’t helping at all.
This is my first real fast. This is tough so far, but I’m still going and will finish. Despite hunger I feel ok physically. But mentally I am anything but “clear”. My brain is mush. I filled my day with empty minded errands. I suppose someone else has had that experience and overcome it. Any advice? I do some bone broth and magnesium already. I have been doing 16:8 for the last 40 days leading up to the fast.

I started fasting this past August after finding out my A1c was 6.7 😱Since then I’ve lost 44lbs feel amazing and absolute beat part is I cured my diabetes!! A1c now 5.3. This is definitely a lifestyle now for me. My regimen is MWF 42hr fasts. Tu/Th/Sa/Su TRE of 16/8, 18/6 or OMAD depending what’s going on that day. Since starting I have been a huge advocate for fasting. One of my coworkers even started after seeing my results and she is doing fantastic as well! Love this app it’s very helpful. Keeps me motivated and on track.

Almost done. This has been really hard to do. So much coffee, water and seltzer.
I’m so disappointed. I felt great the first 36 hours, ok the second day but found myself thinking about food – that was fine, just noticed it but still on track. And the morning of the third day I woke up and felt like I had the flu! Shaky, Absolutely exhausted, my brain was mush, nauseous, and light headed. I had such high hopes about carrying on for an extra day because people report it getting easier on day 3. Even after I had half an avocado and a small handful of nuts, Three hours later I still felt horrible. Had the other half of the avocado plus some mtc oil in my coffee, salmon and A bit of salad and a few more nuts. It’s 12 hours and 3 meals later and I still feel a little yuck. Where did I go wrong?? I really want to be able to do this!!
